Step 1 Tools required:
Small Phillips Screw Driver
Small Flathead or exacto razor A Safe Open Tool (maybe 2-3)
Complete Toolkit available
HERE
Start by removing the bottom dock port spacer with your razor or flathead. Make
sure to insert on one of the long ends and not in the middle of the dock. This
should pop off fairly easy.
Step 2
After the Dock port spacer is removed you
will have access to both screws. Remove these with the Phillips +
driver. Now we can crack the shell open. |
Step 3
Insert your safe open case tool in between the
small gap. You will have to insert this fairly hard and work it up and won until
the bottom of the shell is open. Make sure not to force the case open near the
headphone jack or you will tear it off the board. |
Step 4
Now that we have the backing off of the front
panel we can remove the battery and hard drive panels. Remove the 4 screws
holding the drive case on the board as well as the clip for the battery. Take
the battery out now. |
Step 5
Remove both clips for the clickwheel and battery
now if you haven't done so. |
Step 6
After you remove the battery and 4 screws for the
hard drive case lift up and put the drive with casing above the top part of the
Zune (by the headphone jack). Remove the drive cable clip (black part) and then
take the sticky tape off the label side of the drive. After the tape is lifted
up we can remove the hard drive to replace. |
Step 7
Now that the drive is out we can remove the rest
of the screws to get to the LCD screen and clickwheel. Remove the 6 screws and
pull the board out of the front panel.
If you are installing the 100GB MK1011GAH drive
from Toshiba please move on to the hard drive upgrade section below. |
Step 8
We see the board with screen attached free from
the front panel. |
Step 9
Remove the 4 clips holding the LCD screen to
the board. Now you can gently lift up on the screen to expose the clip holding
it to the board. Make sure not to force the screen out until the clip cable has
been removed. |
Step 10
We can move to the front panel and replace the
clickwheel components now. These should be lifted up easily and taken out of the
front panel now. There are no screws holding this in place. |
Step 11
Front panel is now free from the main unit. We are
all done, just go backwards to reassemble. Let us know if anything else should
be added to this guide. |

HARD DRIVE UPGRADE SECTION:
Step 1
Take the new 60GB or 80GB drive and remove
the metal plate label. Use your fingernail to pop the label side off of
the drive. There are 2 sticker spots holding this on so it will not come
off too easily.

UPGRADES CAN BE PURCHASED HERE |
Step 2
After the label plate is removed we are ready to
connect the new drive inside the Zune. We may also mail the new drive to you
without this plate to make it a bit easier. |
Step 3
We will NOT reuse the hard drive cage when
installing a 60GB or 80GB drive. the drive is too large and we cannot close the
case if we install the new drive using the metal drive cage. for the 40GB drive
you can simply use the above guide as everything will be reused because it is
the exact same size as the 30GB drive. You should cut your old drive pads to fit
2 of them on the new drive as pictured. you cannot use too much or the drive
will not fit properly. You should also reuse the old battery enclosure so the
battery is seated properly. Now just reassemble the Zune and you have a ton more
storage. |
